Born in Great Cressingham in 1890. Apparently registered Swaffham Q2-1890 4B:364. Son of Ham and Margaret HARROD (née NEWTON).

1891 census: Aged 1, George William HARROD was living in Stanford, Norfolk with his father Ham HARROD [23] agricultural labourer; his mother Margaret [24] and his sister Mary Ann [3]. Also with them was Aunt Annie Newton [14]. All were born in Great Cressingham.

1901 census... Aged 11, he was now at Field Barn Cottage, Santon with his parents (father now a horsekeeper), with sister Mary Ann and new siblings, James [8] and Annie [6] born in Stanford and Delilah [4] born in Tottington.

1911 census... Aged 21, George was now a team man on farm, living with the Rushbrooke family at White House Farm, Methwold. His parents and brother James and sister Delilah were now at Brick Kiln Farm, Weeting, three of his siblings had died.

The pension card has his father at No 1. near Post Office, Hockwold

Enlisted in Norwich.
Without his Army records it is impossible to say when he was transferred to the Essex Regiment. Possibly late on, as the 10th Essex were hammered in August 1918 and must have needed reinforcement. The Essex regiment had already been reinforced by Norfolk men in 1915 during the Gallipoli campaign. The 10th Essex were actually alongside the 9th Norfolks on 22nd October 1918, in the Le Cateau area, near Bois de L'Eveque (just NE of Le Cateau).
George's was the only death in the 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment, that day.

George Harrod is buried in Le Cateau Military Cemetery, France grave 5:G:17
